WHERE THE FIRE WAS CHECKED

Pacific Heights, San Francisco, California

(Estimated completion date 2022)

On April 18, 1906, at 5:12 am, a section along the San Andreas Fault near present day Daily City slipped, sending massive seismic waves across Northern California, beginning one of the most catastrophic events the United States has ever known.

A few days later, if you were to be standing in San Francisco, looking north from the intersection of Franklin and California streets, you would see the line where the fire was checked. To your right, lay a city in ruins.  To your left, you would see homes and businesses still in tact, including this remarkable, 3 Story Queen Anne Victorian, which 3 Lights Design has been brought in for a kitchen remodel.

Intentions: For those who love the Bay Area, and its utterly unique history as much as we do, this project has been a dream come true: The opportunity to do a kitchen redesign on one of the most iconic homes in San Francisco, to bask in the care and craftsmanship of all who worked on it before us, and as a building that just barely survived the devastation of the 1906 Earthquake and Fire (as the photo shows), this has truly been a dream come for 3 Lights Design, as real project that offers a pause for reflection.

Recommended by the Zen Master Craftsman, Dylan Arrants, as a design team who could match the soul of the building, an innovator, inventor, media mogul approached 3 Lights Designs in 2019 to work on the project. We tried to look professional and not squeal with joy.

Here’s a bit of the history: Located in renowned Pacific Heights, 1701 Franklin St. is one of the most recognizable estate-like homes in San Francisco & is a historic registered landmark.  The home was designed by W. H. Lille for Edward Coleman in 1895. .

Functional Results: Since the use of the kitchen from a service area to a central gathering area in 120 years, the main challenge of the design has been to create a solution that can open the kitchen up to the dining room when it’s just the family, or to close it off for a catering hub for more formal events.  We are still underway on this one but stay tuned!  It’s going to be amazing!

Aesthetic Results: We’ll leave this to the photos when the complete design is done. Stay tuned!!!
