The Swedes first brought the tradition of building log cabins to the United States and one popular way of adding space to early log cabins was to build a separate log cabin next to the original cabin with gables aligned some set distance away. The intervening space between the cabins was then roofed over and made a covered porch space.
This dovetails nicely with our Longhouse plan concepts. With a simple gesture the introduction of the dogtrot breezeway creates a multi-functional space while also creating separate living quarters (writer’s studio, guest room, office). The dogtrot functions as an indoor/outdoor mudroom, a place to store kayak paddles and fishing gear, a place to socialize with its built-in benches and also serves as an ad-hoc screened porch. With the addition of a fireplace it could even be a wonderful outdoor dining room. Let us know and we can customize this to fit your individual needs.
